Northwest Arkansas Boasts Top Ranked Colleges and Universities

Northwest Arkansas is home to many institutions of higher education that rank high in the nation. This includes private and public universities and colleges offering many programs.

University of Arkansas

The state’s flagship university, the University of Arkansas, is located in Fayetteville. A public land-grant, doctoral research university, the University of Arkansas enrolls more than 27,500 students in over 200 undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Students come from every county in Arkansas and more than 100 countries. Established in 1871, U of A is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with the highest level of
research activity.

The University of Arkansas campus consists of 378 buildings spread across 512 acres of land. The university has a student to faculty ratio of 19:1 and was the recipient of a combined total of $103.2 million in research awards for the 2017 fiscal year. The university is known for its traditions, including Senior Walk — 3 ½ miles of campus sidewalk etched with the names of all U of A graduates since 1871, and “Calling the Hogs” at sporting events. The university’s athletic teams, the Arkansas Razorbacks, compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Southeastern Conference with eight men’s teams and 11 women’s teams in 13 sports

In recent years, the University of Arkansas has been recognized as a “Top-Tier National University,” one of the “Best 371 Colleges,” a “Top Southeastern College,” and one of the “100 Best Public College Values.” The University of Arkansas School of Law has been ranked as a top 150 “Best Law School,” and the Creative Writing Program in the J. William Fulbright College for Arts and Sciences has been ranked as the 18th best program in the nation.

John Brown University

The largest private college in the region, John Brown University is located in Siloam Springs. Founded in 1919, John Brown University is a private, interdenominational, Christian liberal arts college with more than 2,500 students enrolled from 41 states and 50 countries in its traditional undergraduate, graduate, online, and concurrent education
programs. The 200-acre campus has been the site of the university since its founding. The Graduate School at JBU offers 16 graduate degrees in business, education, counseling, and cybersecurity.

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, John Brown University competes athletically in the Sooner Athletic Conference. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report named JBU the top-ranked Arkansas university in its cohort as well as being named a “Best College for Veterans.”

Northwest Arkansas Community College

A public two-year college, Northwest Arkansas Community College is located in Benton and Washington counties with the main campus in Bentonville. Established in 1989, NWACC had an enrollment of 7,715 for the fall semester of 2017. The college offers many areas of study leading to associate degrees.

Northwest Technical Institute

Founded in 1975, Northwest Technical Institute provides educational programs to serve the training/ retraining needs of students who wish to enter a recognized occupation or improve their occupational skills and knowledge so they may achieve advancement in the workplace. Instruction is provided in skilled trades and other technical professions to support the region’s need for a skilled workforce.
